An Introduction to Ontology Languages for the Semantic Web
The Semantic Web is considered as the next generation of World Wide Web, where information is published and interlinked in order to facilitate the exploitation of its structure and semantics (meaning) for both humans and machines. To foster the realization of the Semantic Web, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) developed a set of languages to represent metadata (Resource Description Framework or RDF for short), ontologies (RDF Schema and Ontology Web Language or OWL for short), and queries (e.g., SPARQL). In this talk, I will first give an introduction of RDF(S) and OWL. I then introduce description logics, which are decidable fragments of first-order predicate logic and provide logical underpinings of OWL. Finally, I will introduce some recent work on applying ontologies to integrate information extracted from the Web pages of traditional Web.
