ENGAGE.EU: collaboration without borders

Started in 2020, the ENGAGE.EU European University is made up of leading universities in the fields of management, economics and social sciences, with a wealth of experience in analysing societal change. The ambition of its partners is to enable its students to act as socially engaged European citizens and to have an impact on society as a whole.

The main objective is to develop new models that contribute to the quality, inclusion and competitiveness of European higher education and stimulate the mobility of students and staff. Within the alliance, the partners work in an interdisciplinary way on sustainable solutions to social issues by offering a programme focused on education, innovation and research.

Examples include the offering of more than 500 courses for ENGAGE.EU students in a joint course catalogue, the more than 50 students taking part in the Joint Certificate in Digital Transformation and the seven Expedition Weeks during which nearly 200 students worked on social challenges in collaboration with companies. In addition, a publications platform and a research community platform have been developed and launched, where around 250 academics have come together as sources of inspiration and collaboration.

For UT Capitole more specifically, ENGAGE.EU also means a new Innovation Space open to all members of our university, a training offer for academic and administrative staff, and a university diploma offered in life-long learning education programme for professionals from outside the university.

ENGAGE.EU 2.0: The Commission renews its funding and commitment for the next 4 years

The ENGAGE.EU European University has built bridges, not only between its renowned European universities, but also between countries and individuals. The partners have created a dynamic network of teachers, students, researchers and administrative staff. Together, they have forged new paths of learning, research and collaboration with society.

This second funding period allows us to further develop our visions and expand our efforts. In addition to the commitment to ensure the continuity of the initial achievements, new objectives have been set: building a shared campus, promoting student mobility, developing research capacity, in particular by supporting young researchers and doctoral students, and strengthening our openness to society.

A reminder of the European Universities initiative

Following the Gothenburg Summit in 2017, where EU leaders set out a vision for education and culture, the European Commission has launched two calls for projects in 2018 and 2019 to test different models of "European Universities."

This initiative aims to establish new standards for collaboration between higher education institutions. The European Universities Initiative is intended to serve as a model of good practice for improving the quality, international competitiveness and attractiveness of European higher education.

Building on the progress made during the initial phase, the initiative is now an integral part of the Erasmus+ 2021-2027 programme and now includes 44 different European universities involving around 340 higher education institutions across the 27 EU Member States as well as Iceland, Norway, Serbia and Turkey.

The European Commission is fully committed to the further implementation of the European Universities Initiative and expects that by mid-2024, more than 500 higher education institutions in Europe will be part of such an alliance. This represents around 10% of the total number of institutions.
