Scientific Integrity at UT Capitole

Scientific Integrity at the Heart of UT Capitole’s Academic Practices

Scientific integrity is one of the cornerstones of research and higher education. It is based on fundamental values such as honesty, rigour, transparency and adherence to ethical standards in the production and dissemination of knowledge.

At the Toulouse Capitole University, scientific integrity lies at the heart of academic practice. This means that every member of the academic community — lecturers and researchers, researchers, PhD students and undergraduates — must ensure the reliability of the work carried out and safeguard the quality of the results produced.

Respecting scientific integrity involves, in particular:
  • to avoid any form of fraud, falsification or fabrication of data;
  • to cite sources correctly and acknowledge the work of others;
  • to adopt a critical and honest approach when conducting research;
  • to promote a respectful and responsible working environment.
The university is also committed to raising awareness and training its staff in best practice, in order to prevent breaches and strengthen public confidence in scientific research.

A charter on integrity in scientific research

The circular issued by the Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research in March 2017 (in French) requires all research organisations to adopt a general policy for the promotion of scientific integrity “which directly addresses awareness-raising, training, prevention and monitoring”.

But scientific integrity is not merely a regulatory obligation: it is a genuine collective commitment to knowledge, innovation and society.

At UT Capitole, a charter on integrity in scientific research was adopted by the Research Committee on 9 December 2019 and by the Board of Governors on 17 December 2019.

The responsibilities of the Scientific Integrity Officer

The scientific integrity officer is a recognised researcher who is not involved in the scientific management of research.

Its remit is set out in the 2017 handbook drawn up by the authors of the Corvol report:
  • to ensure the proper implementation of the institution’s general policy on scientific integrity;
  • to ensure that systems and procedures are in place to prevent and address breaches of scientific integrity;
  • to report to the head of the institution.
He is the first point of contact for all those involved in research who have any questions regarding scientific integrity, and for anyone who believes they have identified a breach that warrants action.
