Smart contracts and the promotion of cultural heritage

The CALUMET project focuses on the use of smart contracts (SCs) in new approaches to reclaiming cultural property by decolonial activists and communities of origin. SCs are digital protocols for the automated execution of contracts, notably used on the blockchain, and their legal status remains to be established. These protocols make it possible to split or divide the rights relating to these assets or their digitised copies, thereby paving the way for the reconciliation of divergent interests between custodial institutions, communities of origin and the public. This tool could give rise to new collaborative forms of cultural heritage promotion, provided that smart contracts are validated and executed through legal procedures. These forms of promotion will be studied using an experimental protocol involving the organisation, by stakeholders and supported by smart contracts, of a virtual exhibition featuring ethnographic objects from the Toulouse Museum.
