Shanghai 2026 Rankings by subject: UT Capitole remains number one among non-English-speaking universities in economics

The traditional ‘Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities’, published on Tuesday 15 September 2026, has once again recognised the Toulouse Capitole University as the top non-English-speaking university in economics. Thanks to its constituent institution, the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE), it ranks 16th in the world in this discipline, confirming its international standing.
Through its component institution, the Toulouse School of Economics, the Toulouse Capitole University has just been ranked 16th in the world in the Shanghai Ranking for Economics (+5 compared with 2022, -1 compared with 2025). It remains the top institution in France and continental Europe in the rankings. Once again this year, the University of Toulouse Capitole and TSE are competing with the top 20 American and British institutions.
UT Capitole is also ranked in the 201–300 bracket for the subject of Statistics.
This latest international recognition is a testament to the excellence of the research and teaching programmes delivered by the Toulouse Capitole University Experimental Public Institution. It confirms the transformation strategy undertaken by the university and TSE to attract the best students and researchers – both French and international – to Toulouse. For the record, since 1 January 2023, the University of Toulouse Capitole has become an Experimental Public Institution (EPE). At the same time, TSE has become a ‘Grand établissement’ (GE).

Toulouse Capitole, an internationally recognised university
Toulouse Capitole University is one of the French institutions recognised in the Shanghai Ranking. In the 2026 edition of the overall ranking, it is placed in the 401–500 bracket of the world’s best universities, confirming its position amongst the 500 highest-ranked institutions internationally.
This recognition is based, in particular, on a commitment to excellence in research across a number of fields, including law, economics, management, mathematics, political science, computer science, public administration, languages and communication. The University currently has seven research units and more than 770 lecturers, lecturer-researchers and researchers, who contribute each year to scientific output that is recognised both in France and internationally.
It also reflects the institution’s strategy, which places scientific excellence, international outreach and the impact of research at the heart of its mission.

A ranking to assess universities’ commitment to research
It thus ranks the world’s top 1,000 universities according to six weighted criteria:
- the number of alumni who are Nobel Laureates and Fields Medal winners (10% of the overall score),
- the number of academic staff who are Nobel Laureates and Fields Medal winners (20%),
- the number of highly cited researchers (20%),
- the number of articles published in Nature and Science (20%),
- the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index (20%),
- the academic performance of lecturers, based on the five indicators above divided by the number of permanent research lecturers (10%).
