When the Group Matters: A Game-Theoretic Analysis of Empathy, Team Reasoning, and Social Ties
In this work, we provide a comparative analysis of two theories from the economics literature whose aim is to clarify how agents reason and are able to coordinate when acting as members of the same group: Binmore's theory of empathetic preferences and Bacharach's theory of team reasoning. After discussing the various limitations of these two theories in modeling large multiagent systems and (artificial or human) societies where different competing groups may coexist, we introduce a new model of social ties which appears to provide a simpler and more intuitive approach to modeling collaborative action in the context of multiagent systems.
