Abstract: Modern data management faces increasing pressure form the exponential growth of data, which introduces complex challenges related to storage efficiency, processing, regulatory compliance, and data privacy. Addressing these challenges requires a frugal approach to data management, that emphasizes necessity, efficiency, and sustainability in how data is collected, stored, and utilized.

This presentation explores the concept of frugality in data management, with a particular focus on its relationship to data reduction and data minimization, as they are often used interchangeably.

To clarify how these concepts interact, we propose a conceptual framework that links frugality, reduction, and minimization in a unified perspective. In addition, we are currently developing a context-aware solution designed to generate tailored recommendations for data reduction techniques based on specific constraints and objectives. This presentation will share the motivation behind the solution, outline the proposed approach, and present preliminary results rom ongoing work.
